Alang Ship-Breaking Scrap Prices Hold Steady Despite Mixed Regional Steel Trends
BHAVNAGAR — Ship-breaking scrap prices at Alang, the world’s largest ship recycling hub along the coast of Gujarat, remained range-bound and steady on Monday, reflecting cautious sentiment among recyclers and secondary steelmakers despite fluctuating trends across domestic regional steel markets.

According to market intelligence from commodity tracker BigMint, trading activity in the Alang market experienced a quiet opening to the week, with recyclers choosing to hold price offers flat for both melting scrap and re-rollable plates. The stability follows recent price volatility seen over the previous week, where scrap rates swung amid festive-season disruptions and shifting semi-finished steel demand.
Cautious Buying Across Secondary Mills
Market participants noted that mills and furnace operators in Western India are maintaining a “wait-and-watch” approach before placing bulk bookings. While demand for long products—such as billets and rebar—showed tentative support in selected Northern and Western hubs, downstream mills in other regional centres saw subdued buying interest.
“Semi-finished steel markets across secondary routes have sent conflicting price signals over the past few sessions,” remarked a Bhavnagar-based scrap trader. “Local rolling mills are purchasing primarily on a need-basis to fulfill immediate production runs rather than building inventory, preventing any sharp upward revision in Alang scrap tags.“
Supply Constraints & Global Tonnage Inflow
On the supply side, ship recyclers continue to face a tight inflow of fresh tonnage. High freight rates in global shipping segments, paired with aggressive buying competition from neighbouring recycling yards in Bangladesh and Pakistan, have limited the arrival of end-of-life vessels at Alang’s beachfront plots.
This sustained vessel scarcity has acted as a floor for domestic scrap valuations, preventing prices from dipping even when regional steel demand experiences temporary soft patches.
Near-Term Market Outlook
Industry analysts anticipate the Alang ship-breaking scrap market will remain largely stable in the immediate term. Significant movement in scrap valuations will hinge on whether domestic finished steel consumption gathers pace post-festival season and how global steel scrap benchmarks perform over the coming weeks.
