Gujarat Maritime Board and Norwegian Consulate Explore Cooperation in Ship Recycling
Bhavnagar: The Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) hosted a high-level meeting with the Royal Norwegian Consulate General, Mumbai, to discuss opportunities for collaboration in ship recycling and other areas of mutual interest, reinforcing growing international engagement with Gujarat’s maritime sector.
Mr. Fredrik Bjerke Abdelmaguid, Consul and Deputy Head of Mission at the Royal Norwegian Consulate General, Mumbai, met with Dr. Ajay Kumar, IAS, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Gujarat Maritime Board, for a detailed exchange of views on the future of sustainable ship recycling and maritime cooperation.
According to the Gujarat Maritime Board, the meeting focused on ship recycling, an area in which Gujarat occupies a globally significant position through the Alang-Sosiya Ship Recycling Yard, one of the world’s largest ship recycling clusters. The discussions also covered other maritime sectors where India and Norway can strengthen cooperation through knowledge sharing, technology, environmental sustainability and industry best practices.
The interaction comes at a time when the global ship recycling industry is undergoing a major transformation following the implementation of stricter international environmental and safety standards. Gujarat has been at the forefront of this transition, with a large number of recycling yards at Alang adopting internationally recognised practices to improve worker safety, environmental protection and responsible dismantling of end-of-life vessels.
Norway has long been recognised as a leading maritime nation with expertise in green shipping, sustainable maritime technologies and environmental management. Increased engagement between Norwegian maritime institutions and Gujarat’s maritime administration is expected to create opportunities for collaboration in areas such as sustainable ship recycling, port development, marine environmental protection, innovation and capacity building.
Officials described the meeting as constructive and forward-looking, highlighting the shared commitment of both sides to promote responsible maritime practices and strengthen bilateral cooperation in the maritime domain.
The Gujarat Maritime Board said it was pleased to welcome Mr. Abdelmaguid and expressed confidence that the discussions would pave the way for deeper engagement between Gujarat and Norway in the maritime sector.
As India continues to strengthen its position as a global maritime hub, international partnerships with technologically advanced maritime nations such as Norway are becoming increasingly important. Such exchanges are expected to support the adoption of global best practices while enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of India’s ship recycling and port industries.
