DPA Kandla Sets the Pace for Groundbreaking Decarbonization Projects

13 November 2025 marked another milestone in India’s clean-energy transition as Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) Kandla welcomed a high-level British delegation to its pioneering 1 MW Indigenous Green Hydrogen Plant — the first of its kind in the country.

DPA Kandla, long regarded as one of India’s most dynamic and forward-looking ports, continues to anchor the nation’s decarbonization efforts with rapid progress in clean-energy infrastructure and green-port initiatives. The visit by a senior British delegation, supported by GH2 India and led by the British Deputy High Commissioner Mr. Stephen Hickling, underscored the growing global attention directed toward Kandla’s emerging role in the Green Hydrogen value chain.

During the visit, the delegation toured the state-of-the-art 1 MW Green Hydrogen facility, which represents a major step forward in India’s ambition to build domestic capacity for clean fuel production. The plant showcases indigenous engineering capabilities and signals the beginning of a scalable pathway for green hydrogen generation within major port ecosystems. Officials from GH2 India and DPA Kandla highlighted how the project integrates with the port’s broader plans to adopt sustainable technologies and reduce carbon emissions across logistics and industrial operations.

Mr. Hickling praised DPA Kandla’s commitment to green transformation, emphasising that the port’s progress aligns strongly with global climate objectives and the accelerating push for energy diversification. He also expressed the United Kingdom’s interest in deepening cooperation with India on clean-energy innovation, infrastructure development, and knowledge sharing. The visit is seen as a promising development for future partnerships involving green hydrogen production, storage, distribution, and associated technology transfer.

The delegation was briefed on the port’s expanding decarbonization roadmap, which includes renewable-energy deployment, electrification of cargo-handling machinery, improved waste-management systems, and the development of low-carbon supply chains. DPA Kandla has emerged as one of the most proactive maritime hubs embracing green-port standards, aligning closely with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways’ (MoPSW) larger decarbonization strategy.

The 1 MW Green Hydrogen Plant is a central pillar of that vision. Once fully operational and scaled, it is expected to not only meet a share of the port’s internal energy demands but also support downstream applications such as green-fuel bunkering, industrial consumption, and pilot projects for hydrogen-powered mobility. Experts believe that ports like Kandla can become early movers in establishing domestic hydrogen corridors, given their connectivity, infrastructure readiness, and strategic industrial linkages.

Industry observers note that Kandla’s geographical advantage, coupled with its status as one of India’s highest-performing ports, positions it strongly to become a leading node in the emerging green-fuel economy. With global demand for clean fuels rising and major economies pledging large-scale hydrogen adoption, India’s ability to build competitive indigenous production capacity will be critical. In this context, the strides made by DPA Kandla carry national significance.

Local port officials expressed confidence that the momentum generated through such international engagements will help accelerate investment, innovation, and policy support for green-energy initiatives across Indian ports. They added that the collaboration with GH2 India and the recognition by global stakeholders serve as strong validation of Kandla’s long-term strategic direction.

As India intensifies efforts to meet its net-zero commitments and strengthen energy security, DPA Kandla is increasingly being viewed as a model for sustainable port operations. The visit from the British delegation reflects not only appreciation of the progress made so far but also growing anticipation of the port’s future contributions.

Kandla’s potential to become a key enabler of India’s national and global green-fuel ambitions is now taking tangible shape — advancing the country’s decarbonization agenda one breakthrough at a time.
