US Ambassador Christensen Visits PHP Ship Recycling Yard in Chattogram

Chattogram:

United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen visited PHP Ship Breaking and Recycling Industries Ltd in Chattogram on Thursday, lauding the company’s commitment to advancing workplace safety and sustainable ship recycling practices.

Accompanied by his wife, Deanne Dao, and a high-level US Embassy delegation, the envoy inspected the facility, which holds the distinction of being Bangladesh’s first green-certified ship recycling yard.

During the visit, the US delegation toured various operational zones of the yard, observing firsthand the safety protocols implemented during the dismantling of a vessel. The diplomats also held formal discussions with senior management to assess the yard’s ongoing initiatives, operational workflows, and environmental standards.

Recording his impressions in the company’s visitor book, Ambassador Christensen wrote: “Fascinating to come out and see the continued efforts to ensure this important work can be completed safely. Look forward to continued collaboration.”

US Embassy Labour Attaché Leena Khan similarly conveyed her appreciation to Mohammad Zahirul Islam Rinku, Managing Director of PHP Ship Breaking and Recycling Industries Ltd, highlighting the value of witnessing the facility’s workplace safety measures up close and expressing optimism for sustained bilateral engagement.

Alongside Rinku, Mohammad Akther Parvez, Managing Director of PHP Automobiles, represented the conglomerate in discussions with the American envoys.

The delegation included Economic Officer John Brunsdale, Security-in-Charge Aric Wells, Economic Specialist Asif Ahmed, Labour Specialist Saifuzzaman Mehrab, Public Diplomacy Coordinator Mahadi Al Hasnat, and embassy security personnel.

While Bangladesh’s ship recycling sector serves as a vital economic engine—providing direct employment and supplying substantial raw materials to the domestic steel industry—it has historically faced scrutiny over environmental impact, hazardous waste disposal, and occupational hazards.

PHP Shipyard became a pioneer in addressing these industry challenges by securing international certification for compliance with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, establishing a benchmark for responsible operations nationwide.
