Eco-Drive at Alang: High-Level Delegation Backs Sustainable Ship Recycling
ALANG — A high-level delegation from the Directorate General of Shipping recently visited the Alang-Sosiya ship recycling yard to review worker welfare initiatives and reinforce sustainable recycling practices.

The delegation was led by Shri Killi Mohana Rao, Chief Surveyor (I/c), Directorate General of Shipping, alongside Shri Satish Kamath, Principal Officer, Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) Kandla, and other senior officers. As part of their itinerary, the officials visited the office and training center of the Alang Sosiya Ship Recycling General Workers’ Association (ASSRGWA).
To mark the occasion, the visit commenced with a tree plantation drive on the premises, symbolizing a shared commitment to environmental sustainability.
Following the drive, the delegation held an interactive session with ASSRGWA representatives. The discussions centered heavily on the core pillars of the industry’s future, highlighting the critical importance of skill development, occupational health and safety, worker welfare, and continuous capacity building for the workforce.
Officials emphasized that the ship recycling workforce forms the absolute backbone of the industry. The visit reaffirmed the Directorate General of Shipping’s ongoing commitment to engaging closely with all stakeholders. By doing so, the Directorate aims to ensure that Alang remains a global hub for safe, sustainable, and environmentally sound ship recycling while steadily advancing the development and well-being of its workers.
