Alang on Track to Double Capacity and Achieve Full Green Status: GMB CEO-VC Dr.Ajaykumar
In a major push for the modernisation and expansion of the sustainable maritime industry, Mr. Ajay Kumar, Secretary to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) and Vice Chairman & CEO of the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB), conducted an extensive inspection visit to the Alang Ship Recycling Yard.
The high-level visit highlighted Alang’s rapid transformation into a world-class, environmentally secure maritime hub. Accompanying Mr. Ajay Kumar were Alang Port Officer Mr. Rahul Kumar, senior GMB officials, and a delegation from the Ship Recycling Industries Association (India) (SRIA) led by President Mr. Vishnukumar Gupta, Mr. Sanjay Mehta, Mr. Ramesh Mendapara, Treasurer Mr. Kapurbhai Bansal, Secretary Mr. Hareshkumar Parmar, and Additional Secretary Mr. Anil Jain, along with other executive and general members.
Rigorous Review of Safety and Infrastructure
During the tour, the delegation inspected critical infrastructure facilities, including the GMB Training Centre, the Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facility (TSDF), and the Labor Housing Colony. The officials closely observed and reviewed ongoing ship-cutting operations directly within the plots.
Mr. Ajay Kumar highly commended the strict adherence to worker safety protocols, particularly noting the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by the workforce during operations. The delegation expressed deep satisfaction with the global standards being achieved through major infrastructural developments undertaken by the plot owners.

Vision for a ‘Green Alang’ and Doubling Capacity
Speaking on the industry’s trajectory, SRIA President Mr. Vishnukumar Gupta emphasized that the yard’s alignment with government regulations is accelerating its transition toward becoming a completely green ship recycling destination.
Mr. Gupta credited the continuous support from both the Central and State Governments for driving the comprehensive growth of the sector. He expressed firm confidence that under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Alang Ship Recycling Yard is well on track to double its operating capacity in the near future.
Following the detailed evaluation, the visiting delegation expressed immense satisfaction with the continuous upgrades and the progressive direction of the ship recycling industry.
