India Sends Relief Assistance to Papua New Guinea After Devastating Landslide
Papua New Guinea warmly received a 19-tonne shipment of relief supplies from India, expressing deep appreciation for the helping hand extended during a time of great hardship. This act of generosity echoed the proverb “a friend in need is a friend indeed,” highlighting the strong bond between the two nations.
The aid shipment arrived at Jackson International Airport on Friday, following a devastating landslide that struck Enga Province in Papua New Guinea on May 24th. The landslide caused widespread destruction and claimed the lives of over 2,000 people.
India Steps Up to Support Relief Efforts
Just last month, upon learning of the disaster, India pledged immediate relief assistance of $1 million to support Papua New Guinea in its recovery efforts. This included rehabilitation and reconstruction programs in the affected areas.
Papua New Guinea Officials Extend Gratitude
Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister, Justin Tkatchenko, along with Defense Minister Billy Joseph and other high-ranking officials, were present at the airport to personally receive the Indian aid. They expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and the people of India for their generosity and support during this difficult time.
Delivering Aid to Those in Need
Foreign Minister Tkatchenko assured everyone that the Indian relief supplies would be swiftly delivered to the people most affected by the landslide in the Maip Mulitaka area. He emphasized his appreciation for India’s willingness to stand by Papua New Guinea in a time of grief and need.

India’s High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea spoke at the ceremony, highlighting India’s role as a “Vishwabandhu,” a Sanskrit term that translates to “universal friend.” This concept underlines India’s commitment to global solidarity and its willingness to offer support to nations in need.
A History of Friendship and Assistance
The recent relief package strengthens the existing bond between India and Papua New Guinea. As close partners under the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC), India has consistently demonstrated its support for Papua New Guinea during times of natural disasters. This includes previous instances of assistance provided during the 2018 earthquake and volcanic eruptions in 2019 and 2023.
