Oman Takes a Bold Step Toward Sustainability with Advanced Ship Recycling Facilities
As part of its ambitious goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT) has announced plans to establish state-of-the-art ship recycling and dismantling facilities. These yards will utilize advanced green technologies to ensure environmentally friendly practices, aligning with the sultanate’s sustainability objectives.
Ship recycling, also known as ship breaking, involves dismantling ships to recover reusable parts and raw materials, such as scrap metal. While historically associated with environmental and safety concerns, this process has evolved significantly with modern green technologies. Oman’s planned facilities aim to set new benchmarks in the industry by adhering to strict sustainability standards, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
A Step Toward Sustainable Maritime Practices
Mahna Musa bin Baqer, Director General of Ports at the MTCIT, emphasized the ministry’s role in overseeing Oman’s ports and maritime sector, ensuring compliance with international ship and port security standards. “The ministry’s efforts focus on enhancing the operational efficiency of Omani ports while aligning with global sustainability goals,” Mahna Musa stated.
Central to these efforts is the creation of ship recycling and cutting centres designed to minimize environmental impact. According to Mahna Musa, an economic feasibility study is currently underway to ensure the project’s long-term viability. Once operational, these facilities will not only support Oman’s net-zero ambitions but also position the country as a leader in sustainable maritime practices in the region.
Modernizing Ports and Infrastructure
In addition to establishing ship recycling centres, the MTCIT is focused on the development and modernization of key ports, including Shannah and Masirah. As part of this initiative, the ministry has planned a public auction to attract private sector investment for the operation and enhancement of these ports.
Shannah Port, a vital link to the island of Masirah, has already seen significant upgrades, with new tourist facilities now fully operational. This development aims to boost both local and international tourism, further contributing to Oman’s economic diversification goals.
Another noteworthy project is the establishment of a yacht dock in the wilayat of Quriyat. A plot in the Daghmar area has been earmarked for this venture, which will also be offered for investment through a public auction. This initiative underscores the ministry’s commitment to fostering maritime tourism and creating new economic opportunities for the private sector.
Partnering with Global Leaders
To ensure the highest standards in port management and operation, the MTCIT has signed concession agreements with prominent international companies specializing in these areas. These partnerships aim to leverage global expertise to enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of Oman’s maritime infrastructure.
Furthermore, the ministry has issued licenses for the establishment and operation of marine docks outside the main ports, a move designed to promote innovation and expand the scope of Oman’s maritime services.
Boosting Marine Tourism
Marine tourism has emerged as a growing sector in Oman, with the MTCIT playing a pivotal role in facilitating its development. Between January and August last year, the ministry issued 133 licenses to companies for marine tourism trips, highlighting the increasing demand for such services.
Additionally, eight companies are currently managing and operating marine tourist piers across key governorates, including Musandam, South Batinah, Muscat, and Dhofar. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to position Oman as a premier destination for marine tourism, attracting both domestic and international visitors.
