Ghost Ship ‘Nirvana’ Set for Court-Supervised Auction After Legal Disputes
After the ship was brought to the Alang Ship Recycling Yard for demolition became entangled in a legal dispute, and no bid was received, the court has ordered a public auction of the ship. A valuer and surveyor have also been appointed to determine the price of the ship for the auction.
In May last year, it was decided to buy the ship for demolition by Venus Green Recycling LLP at Plot No. 54 of the Alang Ship Recycling Yard. After the scheduled government work, the ship owners had legal disputes with foreign companies due to previous financial transactions, and when a case was filed before the Gujarat High Court for justice, the court ordered the arrest of the ship. Although the ship remained undecided for a long time, the ship owner did not decide on the ship’s clearance, so the court has ordered the sale of this ship through public auction.
The tanker ship Nirvana is of 9623 metric tons, and a court order to arrest it was issued on May 8, 2025. Later, the Gujarat High Court, which did not decide by any ship owner, appointed Ericsson & Richards to survey the ship and determine the value of the ship and after inspecting the entire ship, it has been ordered to submit its detailed report to the Court Commissioner within 8 days, and the court will decide the terms and conditions of the sale of the ship.
The court will conduct a public auction process, and the Registrar General will appoint an officer of the court for the same. To buy the Nirvana ship from the public auction, the applicant has to deposit a deposit of Rs 3.5 lakh before the court, and the applicant who has paid the highest amount from the public auction to be conducted by the court will be handed over the ship and the court will give the ship in a free and clear condition.
21 crew members of the ship had called for mutiny Even before the Nirvana ship was arrested by the court, the owners of the ship were not distributing food and drinks, fuel, ship’s propellant and other materials to the 21 Indian crew members on board. In this regard, the Indian crew members had called for mutiny and after presenting their pending salary to the Union Ministry, DG Shipping and others, they were brought to the coast and sent home and other crew members were sent on the ship in their place. Due to the ship running out of fuel, it became a danger to other ships at night, like a ghost ship.
