Bangladesh Ship Recycling Board Launches Digital Platforms to Boost Transparency and Global Reach
The Bangladesh Ship Recycling Board (BSRB) has taken a significant step toward modernising the nation’s ship recycling industry with the official launch of its digital platforms, aimed at promoting transparency, operational efficiency, and enhanced global connectivity.
The inauguration ceremony was led by Md. Obaidur Rahman, Secretary of the Ministry of Industries and Chairman of the BSRB, emphasised that the digital move marks a new era for Bangladesh’s ship recycling sector, which is widely recognised as one of the largest in the world.
“This is not just about going online. It is about connecting Bangladesh’s ship recycling industry with the world in a more transparent, accessible, and accountable manner,” Rahman said during the launch event.
The new platforms include an official website (www.bsrb.gov.bd) along with dedicated social media channels on X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, Facebook, and YouTube. Collectively, these channels are designed to provide real-time updates, industry insights, and official announcements, while also serving as a bridge between regulators, industry players, and international stakeholders.
Digital Leap for a Global Industry
Bangladesh’s ship recycling industry plays a pivotal role in the global maritime and steel supply chains. Every year, dozens of end-of-life ships are dismantled along the country’s shores, supplying scrap steel and creating thousands of jobs. However, the sector has often faced challenges in terms of transparency, compliance, and perception in the international market.
By establishing a digital presence, the BSRB aims to enhance industry oversight, foster greater international confidence, and position Bangladesh as a responsible leader in ship recycling.
The official website will act as the primary hub for industry news, regulatory updates, guidelines for stakeholders, and resources for investors and researchers. The integration of social media platforms ensures broader engagement with a diverse audience — from policymakers and environmental groups to shipowners and global recycling networks.
Transparency and Accountability
One of the key motivations behind the launch is to ensure transparency in regulatory functions. According to Rahman, digital engagement will also help in monitoring and communicating Bangladesh’s progress in meeting international conventions such as the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, which the country ratified in 2023.
“Transparency builds trust. Through these platforms, we want to demonstrate that Bangladesh is committed to adopting best practices and aligning with global standards in ship recycling,” Rahman added.
Industry Reactions
Industry insiders have welcomed the initiative, calling it a timely move that reflects the modernisation of Bangladesh’s regulatory institutions. Many believe that greater visibility will also help counter negative perceptions about working conditions and environmental challenges that the sector has faced in the past.
A representative of a major ship recycling yard in Chattogram noted that global stakeholders increasingly demand proof of compliance and accountability. “With BSRB’s official digital platforms, we will now have a credible channel to showcase our improvements and commitments,” he said.

Beyond regulations, the BSRB’s online presence is expected to serve as a platform for dialogue and collaboration. Stakeholders, including shipowners, NGOs, and international observers, will now have direct access to updates and opportunities for engagement. The inclusion of multimedia platforms such as YouTube will also allow for visual storytelling, showcasing industry progress, training efforts, and policy initiatives.
