Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Launches Major Maritime Tech Push with New Digital Initiatives
New Delhi, 27 June 2025 — In a landmark move aimed at modernising India’s maritime sector, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, today launched a series of key digital initiatives to enhance operational efficiency, transparency, and sustainability.
At a high-profile event in New Delhi, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) to establish a state-of-the-art Digital Centre of Excellence (DCoE). This centre will serve as a hub for developing innovative digital solutions for port operations, logistics, and shipping.
The Minister also officially launched the SAGAR SETU platform, which has now gone live. This digital solution is designed to improve end-to-end logistics connectivity by offering a unified interface for stakeholders across the maritime supply chain, thereby reducing delays and enhancing cargo handling efficiency.
In another milestone, Sonowal unveiled a Standardised Template for Scale of Rates (SOR) for all Major Port Authorities, a step expected to simplify tariff structures, improve investor confidence, and bring transparency in port pricing mechanisms.
Further emphasising environmental responsibility, the Minister released a new report titled “Gateway to Green,” highlighting MoPSW’s roadmap for sustainable and eco-friendly maritime development.
“These initiatives reflect our commitment to harnessing digital technology for driving transformation in India’s maritime ecosystem,” said Sonowal. “By embracing smart solutions and sustainability, we are building a future-ready and globally competitive maritime sector.”
These developments mark a significant stride toward the government’s vision of a digitally empowered and environmentally friendly maritime infrastructure under the Maritime India Vision 2030.
