Six individuals, including the officer-in-charge of the Sitakunda police station, are facing legal action in connection with the death of a ship-breaking worker.
On August 26th, a 24-year-old laborer named Md Russell tragically passed away in the Bhatiari area of Sitakunda in Chattogram. In response to this tragedy, Russell’s father, Yunus Mia, filed a case in the Chattogram Judicial Magistrate Court-4 on Sunday, October 1st. The defendants in this case include Asaduzzaman Swapan, the owner of MB Hanimadhu and Southern Salvage; Musaddek Mia, who was the contractor for NB Hanimdhu ship workers; Farooq Ahmed, a cutterman; Enamul; Sitakunda police station’s Officer-in-Charge, Tofail Ahmed; and Sub-Inspector Muqib Hasan. They are facing charges of murder and concealing the victim’s body.

Asaduzzaman Swapan and Musaddek, who are brothers, have been running their business in an abandoned yard adjacent to the Bhatiari Ship Breaking facility in Sitakunda.
According to the case statement, Md Russell worked as a laborer on a scrap ship owned by Asaduzzaman Swapan. On the morning of August 26th, he went to work but did not return home that night. When Russell’s father conducted a search, he reached out to Asaduzzaman Swapan and Musaddek Mia, the ship’s owner. They told him that, due to damage to the boat, all workers had been instructed to swim to a nearby ferry for food. However, Russell did not participate in this, leading to a dispute with the ship’s manager, Musaddek, and the contractor, Farooq.
Yunus Mia, the plaintiff, later learned that another worker named Mohiuddin was forced to swim to the food ferry around 4 pm. Three other workers subsequently reported that Russell had fallen into the water. The defendants claimed that, despite extensive searches, they were unable to locate Russell.
On the night of August 27th, Yunus Mia visited the Sitakunda police station around midnight to file a General Diary (GD). He alleged that OC Tofail Ahmed and SI Mukib Hasan detained him until 4 am and refused to accept the GD. On August 28th, Yunus Mia reported this incident verbally to the DIG of the Chattogram range.

Russell’s body was found in the Bholaipara Beribandh area of Barbakund in Sitakunda on September 2nd. Despite Yunus Mia’s identification of his son’s body, SI Mukib Hasan insisted on a DNA test before releasing it. Eventually, the body was handed over to Anjuman Mufidul Islam for burial.
The plaintiff has accused Asaduzzaman Swapan and Musaddek of involvement in his son’s death, alleging that they also threatened and displayed hostile behavior towards him.
Advocate Golam Mawla Murad, the plaintiff’s lawyer, confirmed that the court has accepted the case and has requested updates from the police station within a week.
Sitakunda OC Tofail Ahmed mentioned that the Naval police had recovered the body and handed it over to Anjuman Mufidul Islam. He stated, “We have been wrongly implicated in the case without any basis.”
