(2) India expects ₹10 tn pacts at maritime meet: Sonowal
India expects to sign investment pacts worth ₹10 trillion during the Global Maritime India Summit in New Delhi slated for 17-19 October, Union minister for ports, shipping and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said. In an interview, Sonowal said India is in talks with Russia to operationalize the recently proposed route of Chennai to Vladivostok, potentially reducing the maritime journey between the two countries to a mere 12 days. The development will facilitate trade between the two countries by providing a faster and cheaper way to transport oil.
(3) CMA CGM and Maersk Join Forces to Reduce Emissions in the Shipping Industry
CMA CGM and Maersk, two of the largest container shipping companies in the world, have announced their collaboration in the pursuit of reducing emissions in the sector. The companies have expressed their commitment to supporting the use of methanol as a fuel and conducting research on potential alternatives like ammonia. The shipping industry is currently facing the challenge of determining the most suitable fuels and vessel technologies to adopt on a large scale, with the goal of achieving net zero emissions by the mid-21st century. Maersk, a Danish company, has been focusing on “green methanol” as a potential solution. Recently, they unveiled plans for a new company dedicated to fuel production.

(4) Roadshow by ministry of ports in Varanasi
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) will hold a roadshow (symbolic) in Varanasi on September 25, paving the way for the highly anticipated 3rd Global Maritime India Summit 2023 (GMIS). The event is scheduled at the Trade Facilitation Centre in Varanasi. Union minister of ports, shipping and waterways and ministry of Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal, will chair the meeting to be joined by representatives from governments of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal, stated a press release. UP’s minister of transport Daya Shankar Singh, principal secretary, transport government of UP, Lakko Venkateshwarlu, transport secretary of Jharkhand Kripa Nand Jha, transport secretary of West Bengal Dr Saumitra Mohan, and transport secretary of Bihar Sanjay Kumar Agarwal will attend the meeting. Anchored by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the Varanasi meeting will be a platform to explore the maritime sector’s growth, foster collaboration, and unlock opportunities for stakeholders in this vital sector. The event is also expected to witness presence of Nepal’s physical infrastructure & transport minister Prakash Jwala.
