The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has started the 19th Maritime State Development Council (MSDC) at Kevadia, Gujarat. This 2-day event is being led by Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister of MoPSW, and attended by other important figures like Shri Shripad Naik and Shri Shantanu Thakur, who are also from MoPSW. Shri TK Ramachandaran, the Secretary of MoPSW, along with other high-ranking officials from coastal states, Union Territories, various government ministries, Indian Navy, and Indian Coast Guard are present too.
MSDC is a top advisory body formed in May 1997 to help develop the Maritime Sector in a way that benefits both major and smaller ports. The first day of the event included discussions about different projects, challenges, and accomplishments in the sector. These discussions sparked numerous ideas to improve cooperation among major and minor ports, coastal ports, and maritime boards.

During the event, Secretary T K Ramachandran shared, “We’re working towards establishing India as a significant maritime hub, and the Global Maritime India Summit 2023 will play a vital role in this. Through collaboration and strategic partnerships, we aim to promote sustainable growth in our maritime industry by incorporating innovation and advanced technology.” He also urged Coastal States and Union Territories Governments to support MoPSW in speeding up these important projects.
The initial day of the meeting focused on the Global Maritime India Summit 2023 (GMIS 2023) and the achievements and opportunities across Coastal States & UTs. This was a chance for senior officials and representatives from these areas to discuss their involvement in the upcoming Global Maritime India Summit 2023, scheduled to be held in New Delhi from October 17th to 19th, 2023.

GMIS 2023 is a significant event centered around the maritime sector. It brings together key figures from the industry to explore opportunities, understand challenges, and encourage investment in India’s maritime sector. Building on the success of the previous editions in 2016 and 2021, this third summit aims to highlight even more opportunities for both domestic and international maritime stakeholders and investors. Representatives from over 100 countries and numerous delegates are expected to participate, including exhibitors and investors from various areas of the maritime sector.
On the second day of the event, discussions will revolve around various development plans, such as the implementation of the Sagarmala Programme, the creation of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat, the development of National Waterways, challenges and prospects for RoPax/Ferries, urban passenger waterway transportation, road and rail port connectivity, success stories of Coastal States & UTs, and the issues and challenges faced by State Maritime Boards.
